Goto mote.org The latest facts, stats, pictures and maps for the BP oil spill, its size, its impacts on wildlife, and the efforts at containment and cleanup in the Gulf of Mexico. The explosion of the Transocean Deepwater Horizon rig on April 20 killed 11 people and led to the BP oil spill — the largest in US history — that threatens coastal Louisiana, Gulf Coast fisheries, Gulf of Mexico ecosystems, and perhaps the East Coast, as the spill reaches the loop current. Here, you’ll find updates about the impacts to animals, fish, birds and seafood in the Gulf of Mexico, about the efforts at containment and cleanup, facts about the oil leak’s size, as well as pictures, video, maps and more. You’ll also find information about how to help, and about individuals who have dedicated their lives to protecting the oceans from just such a disaster. The Size of the Spill 5000 to 60000 barrels a day: Rate at which oil is leaking from the Deepwater Horizon rig. Some experts now believe that original estimates of 5000 barrels a day (that’s 210000 gallons) were way off. And BP says that it’s likely that the leak rate is around 60000 barrels (2.5 million gallons) a day. (Source: Los Angeles Times) 19 million to 39

COLUMN: Water, water everywhere, and all the oil did stink
Imagine a pipe, five feet wide, spewing crude oil like a fire hose from what is probably the planet’s largest, high-pressure oil and gas reserve. Even with the best technology known to date, the Deepwater Horizon rig opened a gaping hole in that…

Oil Spill in Gulf of Mexico 2010 and 20 Dead Turtles are washed Ashore. In possibly the worst environmental disaster since Alaskas Exxon Valdez spill in the late 1980s, the BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico just keeps getting worse and worse. Not only has the government issued a 10 day fishing ban, but now dead turtles are said to be washing up ashore. The oil spill started after an explosion at the Deepwater Horizon rig, an offshore drilling platform ran by Transocean for BP. This caused the platform to capsize and an oil head to rupture. For many days now, estimates point to somewhere around 200000 gallons of crude oil are being poured into the waters of the Gulf. The Gulf produces between 1/4 and 1/3 of all the nations sea food. Prices of sea food will likely rise as the supply dwindles. Entire families could lose their livelihood and already states are pushing for the area to be declared a disaster so that those affected by the oil slick can receive money set aside from the government.
