Efforts are continuing in the Gulf of Mexico to stop the oil leak from a US oil rig that exploded and sank last week. Heavy seas however are hampering the works. During a previous attempt, four robotic submersibles conducted an unprecedented operation to shut the leak with a giant state-of-the-art device. BP plans to collect leaking oil on the ocean bottom by lowering a large dome to capture the oil and then pumping it through pipes and hoses into a vessel on the surface. Around 160 thousand litres of oil is pouring into the sea from the well, causing a massive oil slick that could pose an environmental disaster. Wake Up From This Matrix (Msg Me). The US Government says it won’t take over oil clean-up operations in the Gulf of Mexico from BP. Washington had criticised the oil giant for being too slow in its crisis management efforts. BP is pinning its hopes of stopping the gusher on yet another technique never tested 1500 metres underwater: a ‘top kill’ in which heavy mud and cement would be shot into the blown-out well to plug it up. At least 23 million litres of crude oil have spewed into the Gulf, according to a Coast Guard and BP, though some scientists say they believe the spill has already surpassed the 42 million litre 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill off Alaska as the worst in US history. COVINGTON, La. (AP) – BP kept pumping heavy mud into its blown-out well beneath the Gulf of Mexico on Friday, but the company’s chief executive cautioned it will be two more days before anyone knows if the latest fix attempt will end the uncontrolled flow of crude that has already become the worst oil spill in U.S. history. Mud beats oil (so far) to stop Deepwater Horizon spill
BP’s “top kill” effort has halted the flow of oil from the Mississippi Canyon 252 well, according to U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen, national incident commander for the oil spill response.
