Dime- to golfball-sized balls of tar washed up over the weekend on Dauphin Island, three miles off the Alabama mainland at the mouth of Mobile Bay and much farther east than the thin, rainbow sheens that have arrived sporadically in the Louisiana marshes.

More than 2-million gallons of oil-water mix collected
PORT FOURCHON, La. (AP) – The Coast Guard says about 2.1 million gallons of an oil-water mix has been collected since a spill in the Gulf of Mexico. BP PLC chief operating officer Doug Suttles has said the mix collected is about 10 percent oil and the rest water.
