The MODIS instrument, on board NASA’s Terra and Aqua satellites, is capturing images of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The spill began on April 20, 2010 with the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig. This short video reveals a space-based view of the burning oil rig and, later, the ensuing oil spill through May 24, 2010. The oil slick appears grayish-beige in the images and changes due to changing weather, ocean currents, and the use of oil dispersing chemicals. Images in the video time series were selected that show the spill most clearly. BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles continues to insist no massive underwater oil plumes in ‘large concentrations’ have been detected from the spill in the Gulf of Mexico. But deep underwater – the oil is so thick that it blocks out almost all of the light below. As seen on AP video images filmed by divers 64 kilometers off the coast of Venice, Louisiana. BP/transocean or Obama or BUSH? Who’s fault is the oil spill? Or does that even matter? The whitehouse has been too cozy with big oil for a long time. Even before bush’s presidency. We are hearing from obamas camo that laxed regulations & close relationships with the oil companies and Bush admin are to blame. Oil guys blame other oil guy and Obama blames them, then bush . Sometimes crap happens. That’s life. But from what these guys say supervisor and higher ups were more worries bout making more obscene amount of $ than the safety.

The Dead Zone in the Gulf of Mexico
While the Deepwater Horizon oil gusher continues to mire the Gulf of Mexico, another threat could be growing below the oil slicked surface. This is the “Dead Zone”. Currently the most well known dead zone is about 8,500 square miles in size and lies in the Gulf of Mexico, where the Mississippi River dumps high nutrient runoff from its vast drainage basin, which includes the heart of the U.S … Read more on Environmental News Network

The chief executive of BP has told Sky News he believes the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill will end up having only a “very, very modest” environmental impact. Experts had feared the Deepwater Horizon disaster could have led to one of the worst environmental catastrophes in US history. But the British oil giant has risked outrage along the Gulf Coast by predicting a far smaller impact. Dr Tony Hayward said: “I think the environmental impact of this disaster is likely to have been very, very modest. “It is impossible to say and we will mount, as part of the aftermath, a very detailed environmental assessment but everything we can see at the moment suggests that the overall environmental impact will be very, very modest.” BP has begun capturing some of the leaking oil after inserting a suction tube into the fractured riser pipe on the seabed. BP image shows the main leak at the Deepwater Horizon site (Pic: BP plc) It is gathering up an estimated one fifth of the oil pumping out of the fractured well. Dr Hayward said: “Over the last 36 hours we have made a lot of progress on containment on the seabed. “We have a piece of technology engineering which we have developed and which is now allowing us to produce oil from the leak to the surface.” The BP chief spoke to Sky News after completing a visit to Florida where he handed over m (£17m) to pay for an advertising campaign for the state’s tourism industry. He appeared upbeat as he met teams at BP’s vast crisis control … Video Rating: 3 / 5
