A summary of events on Monday, June 14, Day 55 of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill that began with the April 20 explosion and fire on the drilling rig Deepwater Horizon, owned by Transocean Ltd. and leased by BP PLC, which is in charge of cleanup and containment. MOBILE – Video is available from a Coast Guard helicopter over flight at 7 p.m. on June 13 of the largest oil spill response recovery and remediation effort in US history. The video contains footage of 24 skimming vessels, 20 support vessels and three drilling rigs. More than 24,700 personnel are currently responding to protect the shoreline and wildlife and cleanup vital coastlines. More than 5,500 vessels are responding on site, including skimmers, tugs, barges, and recovery vessels to assist in containment and cleanup efforts—in addition to dozens of aircraft, remotely operated vehicles, and multiple mobile offshore drilling units.
