Rep. Peter Welch questioned leaders of BP, Transocean and Halliburton on May 12 about the devastating human and environmental toll of the Gulf oil spill. Welch visited the Gulf region on Friday with a bipartisan delegation of Energy and Commerce Committee members. The group flew over the spill site, were briefed by response officials and met with residents and business owners affected by the spill. Welch recently cosponsored the BP Deepwater Horizon Inquiry Commission Act, which would create an independent, non-partisan commission to investigate the causes of the Gulf spill and seek to prevent future incidents from occurring.

Florida Tourism Ads Could Change
Forty-three days after the Deepwater Horizon explosion, oil has made its way into Florida waters. If the oil hits Florida’s coast this week as predicted, the state will have to change its tourism message.

As submersible robots made another risky attempt to control the underwater Gulf oil gusher, the crude on the surface spread, closing in on Florida. BP’s stock plummeted and took much of the market down with it, and the federal government announced criminal and civil investigations into the spill.

US President Barack Obama is to set up a commission to investigate the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The move’s been used in the wake of other national disasters. It comes after warnings the leaking oil may reach the Florida coastline. BP, which ran the rig, has since managed to attach a pipe to contain the leak. However, experts warn it could face a clean up bill of billions.
