ABC’s This Week panel discusses the BP oil spill. visit: firedoglake.com
White House response to BP oil spill
BP should foot 100% of the bill. period
What this oil spill is gonna do to the environment is worse than Katrina!
I 110% agree with Katrina, we need a Manhattan Project/New Deal for renewable energy, however any talk about NOT drilling offshore is ignorant and assinine. You are literally crazy if you don’t think we need to drill that oil to power the transition to renewables which unfortunately will take more than a decade no matter how hard we try.
you havent discussed BLOWING up BP oil rigs with your airforce … what the hell is going on in your studio ?
@genie0390 I dont know about Obama but, solar wind wave ethanol nuclear hydrogen nat gas for a few. Are we pushing fusion hard enough? Screw politics we are making the Saudis trillionaires with money sucked out of our economy.
@437thx1138
why not tell me what that green, clean energy source is that Obama talks about, and how will it drive our hundreds of millions cars and trucks and trains and jetliners
i really would like to know
@genie0390 We have very large gas reserves for several years. Stop subsidizing corn for McDonalds food and we still plenty of land burger would be $1.29 instead of $1. We won’t run out of land any time soon.This is still only meant as a transition to greener energy production. Plenty of areas in the south we could grow cane. (put subsidies into cane).
Not simple. So if it is hard do nothing? Use all means of production even it only 2%. It will add up.
“There’s a flip-flop I could believe in”… Priceless. Maher’s point is pretty strong. We’re looking beyond responsibility at this point. It goes beyond who’s to blame. At this point, we’re looking for which representatives we vote into office have the guts to stand up against these volatile resource mining processes and not just regulate them, but actively search for other alternatives.
@437thx1138
taking land out of growing current crops and growing cane would drive food prices sky high, here and world wide
America does not have the climate conditions to do this in the 1st place
using natural gas would drive trucks and cars but the vastly increased demand would drive home heating bills through the roof
@terpis
OK, I have an open mind on the subject,..really!!
to get 200 million vehicles in the US off oil (gasoline) tell me what the alternate energy source would be
tell me how do airlines operate without jet fuel?
tell me how 18 wheelers operate, and how do trains work to distribute the goods they carry now
if we grow sugar cane for fuel what will that do to world food production and prices
i frankly would like electric cars with traction mtrs all wheels, great traction/acceleration
@genie0390 As stated on wiki and elsewhere – ‘no longer any light vehicles in Brazil running on pure gasoline (significant gas savings)
Since 2005, ethanol prices have been very competitive without subsidies.’
The idea was to use oil as an export. But they must import heavier oils and diesel, their oil is incompatible for refining these. We have the land to grow cane, nat gas, nation wide distribution etc so why can’t we do this!
@terpis
Politifact confirms my recollection as accurate.
So what if they’re not at zero? Not ‘post-petroleum’?
They’re a poverty-plagued Latin American nation, ferchrissesakes…one that only escaped repressive rule by military dictatorship in the last 30 or so yrs…we should be doing light yrs better than them, and instead we do much much worse.
@genie0390
Production to sell on world markets wasn’t Maher’s point…oil CONSUMPTION is what matters when we’re talking about ‘getting off oil’.
That said, while I’ve read about Brazil’s making lots of headway on greening their domestic energy usage, I hadn’t heard the country was down to zero.
that’s funny, we can’t trust the government to the the things we don’t ant them to. we want big government to stay out of our lives until we want them to fix things.
I love Katrina Vanden Heuvel–I’m always disturbed by George Will–whose message always seems to be “this is the way it’s always been.”
There needs to be a tv show like Deadliest Catch for the coal miners, and off-shore riggers to show the public just how dangerous and horrible those jobs are.
GO WIND, GO SOLAR.
Brazil got off oil?? BS!! Lot of offshore stuff going on there, with loans from Obama administration
Government = not scientists = shut the hell up you paper pushers.
You know what…. all you government morons should shut the hell up because you are not scientists and all you are is paper pushers…. and during disasters all you do is screw shit up ie: katrina…
It’s us, The american consumer that is at fault here…Not Cheyney, Not Bush, Not BP.
If BP Had the best safety record in the world…Another oil company would of had a misshap…START DEMMANDING CLEAN ENERGY PEOPLE!!! This is The only way.
Same goes for the coal industry…The Canadian Mining companies are destroying central and south America…The Chineese are Over fishing. When does it stop?
@jimitl5 Palin??? What does she have to do with anything?? She’s a private citizen… Obama took over a million from BP. What is your point bringing up Palin?Private citizen vs President of the US.. I can’t follow your argument..
look at those Zombies, 6 people standing there as there are not responsible for anything, lol
This is not a problem for an oil company, this is a matter of international concern. Pick up the GMO spill from Monsanto, and get the green plan going. Floods, forest fires, hurricanes, tornadoes…, the economy won’t pickup, but it’s not a reason to speed up the end. Get the army involved, and if that disaster isn’t fixed in a week, call other countries into this planetary mess.
The blame for this belongs with all of us who have not demanded that this country develop a comprehensive energy policy.
@PURPLECHAVEL That may be the dumbest idea I have ever heard. Educate yourself about the toxic effct of this oil. Its not just a question of removing it. It has a long lasting toxic effect.
@imax1971 They all have and thats the point, they are all in bed with oil. Slimy bastards. That goes for that slimy bitch Palin as well.
This needs to be the wake up call for everyone. We need to decrease our dependence on oil, screw “drill baby drill”, screw Sarah Palin, its getting too costly and too dangerous trying to get at the reserves that exist. We need a comprehensive energy policy NOW, not 10 years from now. In 10 years it will be too late.
y’aall cant bite can ya ? babble … or is it barackabble … throw a dog a dome … i mean bone and off they run … y’all cant bite ! … y’aall have been boned ! … i mean domed
I imagine the greedy bank execs are using this horrible catastrophe to make more stolen cash. Guarantee ya’ they’re using (stealing) their own customer’s money & selling short BP stock as fast as possible When it’s all over & just the decimation of the gulf remains, then greedy bank execs will pat themselves on the back for a job well done. Then they’ll celebrate by playing golf.
If you continue doing business with any of these companies: Reuters Group, Rolls-Royce, IBM, Goldman Sachs, Motorola, Intel Corporation, McDonald’s, and Bank of America, all of which are companies connected to BP, while this oil spill contaminates our oceans, you are a liar and your voice deserves to be silent. I pledge to not spend a single dollar of extra money on dining out, entertainment, clothing, electronics, or any other non-essential item until this oil spill is completely cleane

Obama is a pathetic excuse of a president.. An empty suit… A chicago political tub of shit.. Oh, did I mention that he took millions from BP in campaign contributions?
Now that the oil has been released into the sea,it is a matter of recovering it again,my idea would be to use modified dredgers to remove the oil from the surface before refining the sea water out and the normal process. Where dredgers normally feed from the sea floor they can be set to sea level for this operation.
FUCK YOU BP!!!
I FUKN HATE U FOR DOING THIS TO THE EARTH, U GREEDY FUKS, I WANT TO DESTROY ALL YOUR STATIONS IN MY COUNTRY AND I COULDNT GIVE A FUK ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES BECAUSE I KNOW I WOULD BE MORALLY RIGHT NO MATTER WHAT THE LAW SAYS. FUCK U FROM THE DEPTHS of MY HEART!!!
Bush took too much grief for Hurricane Katrina.
So out of fairness, I cut Obama slack for anything related to this fiasco.
@brilliantcivilian then you should refuse to enter an Arco statoin as well. It’s Arco/BP now to my understanding.
@flashrewind I’m not suprised at that comment you make. I somewhat feel the same way when civilized govts get corrupted where laws are not enforced, border security is lax, and the list goes on and on. Though depending on what part of the U.S. you live in it is still peaceful but with all that goes on, I’m just waiting for the massive bad news due to years of greed, corruption, fiscal irressponsibily, and wars. So much for the world humanitarian effort.
@johnnybagofdonets by staying out of tehir gas stations, that means you’ll be staying away from Arco.
Americans, Boycott BP. Stay out of their gas stations. Screw Britian and Up-The Queen…
What parent would name their son janet?
they really need those subs to shut the well.
